Theodor Knywel ran a pet shop in Gärtnerstraße in the Hoheluft-West district of Hamburg. Similar to other well-known ethnographic object dealers, Knywel probably acquired the three pieces from the Kingdom of Benin through intermediaries in the port of Hamburg. He sold them to the Museum für Völkerkunde (now MARKK, Hamburg) in 1911.
