George Fabian Lawrence, also known as ‘Stoney Jack’, was an antiquarian in London from around 1895 until 1939 and ran a shop at 7 West Hill, Wandsworth. He catalogued collections at the Guildhall Museum (1900–1903) and the Kingston & Richmond Museums. After Guildhall, he moved to the London Museum (1911–26), where he was director of excavations. He was also a collector of antiquities and passed many of his finds to the British Museum, London, for which he was a regular correspondent (British Museum website). He was known for buying many artefacts from the London navvies (building-site workers) he contacted directly in the field (Dash, 2013). From 1900 to 1901, Lawrence sold objects from the Kingdom of Benin to British collectors and museums (Augustus Henry Pitt-Rivers, the British Museum, etc.) either directly or through sales (Stevens Auction Rooms, 12 February 1901). Since he is known to have built up a significant network, it is likely that members of the British Military Campaign on Benin came to his shop shortly after returning to London to sell the objects they had looted in Benin City.
