Wilhelm Albert Maschmann was a captain living in Hamburg who had excellent connections in West Africa that allowed him to acquire a collection of ninety-one pieces in 1899 from an English agent who was present in the area around Benin City. He sold a number of objects to the Museum für Völkerkunde in Vienna (Völger, 2007, p.220).
