Born in India, Herbert Sutherland Walker was from Powick, Worcerstershire, and was educated at Sandhurst Military Academy. He served ten years in the army in India before being named intelligence officer for the British Military Campaign on Benin in 1897. He was subsequently promoted to lieutenant-colonel.
