Purchased by Mr Comins on behalf of the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum at a Mssrs Foster (Edward Foster & Sons) auction on 16 July 1931, lot 88. Lots 72-109 of this auction were described as 'the Property of a Gentleman who was a member of the Benin Expedition', subsequently identified as Captain Herbert Sutherland Walker (JMH, 2021).
Bell; lost-wax cast in brass. Quadrangular in form with strap handle and flaring sides. Decorated with human head in low relief set in central lattice openwork section on front panel. Right and left panels and handle also have central latticework sections. Iron clapper suspended from hole at top.
Register 1954: 'Composite: brass bell of square section, three of the sides have open lattice work panels, in the centre of one of them is a human face, the fourth side is engraved with a crescent motif, the clapper is of iron, looped brass handle.'
