William F. C. Ohly was born in Kingston upon Hull, England. He travelled with his family to Frankfurt am Main and studied at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut. In 1904, he went to Berlin to work with Hugo Lederer as a sculptor until 1914, and later went to school in Geneva.
