Elder Dempster & Co. was a British shipping company whose headquarters were in Liverpool and which provided many of the connecting services to West Africa. In 1896, the company supported calls by commercial actors for greater control over the Benin Kingdom (Hicks, 2020, 84[119]). William John Davey was one of its managers.
