Major Searle seems to have been part of the Niger Coast Protectorate, and he was with Felix Norman Roth in Ukhiri, in the ‘advance guard’, during the British Military Campaign on Benin. Searle was in charge of building huts and looking after the provisions for the mess in Ukhiri, and he led the gunners (Roth, 1903, iii [128]).
