Walter Henry Cowan was a British naval officer in West Africa from 1894 to 1897 on HMS Barrosa. He took part in the British Military Campaign on Benin in 1897, during which he was in charge of the carriers (Rawson, 1897, 2519-21[129]; Dawson, 1949[127]).
