Description

Herbert Alexander Child entered the Royal Navy in 1883 but resigned in 1894 to join the Royal Niger Coast Protectorate as marine superintendant. He served on successive colonial expeditions in Nigeria: Brohimi (1894), Brass River (1895), Benin City (1897), Aro (1901–2) and Brass River (1905), and was promoted to lieutenant in 1891 and lieutenant commander in 1899 (British Museum website[278]).
