Sydow, Eckart von (1885-1942)
Description

Eckart von Sydow was an art historian at the University of Berlin. He visited Benin City in 1936 and purchased a terracotta leopard head. He presented this sculpture to Eduard von der Heydt, who had co-financed his trip. He also gave his patron a photo album documenting his journey, including scenes of streets, festivities and ancestral altars of dignitaries.
