Ekọrọkọrọ (padlocks) were used in Benin Kingdom for securing valuables and continue to be used today. Some Ekọrọkọrọ were intricately decorated and cast in brass, indicating that they may have been used within Ọba Palace or other royal palaces. Ekọrọkọrọ (padlocks) were used in Benin Kingdom for securing valuables and continue to be used today. Some Ekọrọkọrọ were intricately decorated and cast in brass, indicating that they may have been used within Ọba Palace or other royal palaces. As with the Ekọrọkọrọ used today, the key is inserted into the body of the lock and turned to release the mechanism and unlock it. Interestingly, although a number of keys are held in institutional collections today, these collections have a relatively small number of padlocks.
