From acquisition "thunderbolt". Register 1954 Stone, roughly triangular, smooth on one side, faceted on the other. Worked stones from Benin. Nevins Collection. Each is marked with a registration number in ink. Shango is the god of thunder and lightening. Among his symbols are stone celts (UGHAVAN) which are believed to be thunder bolts. They are placed on his altars or kept as amulets. If a peasant finds a celt in his fields, he places it among his produce or on the altar of the god with prayers for rain and an increase of crops.
