British Expedition to Benin City, 1897.
Physical descriptionDescription
Osun staff (part of); lost-wax cast in brass. Lower part of staff has circular platform with standing figure holding lidded vessel. Figure wears skirt, string of beads and upright striated headdress. Coiled snakes and chicken heads in relief on platform surface. Surmounted by cylindrical shaft decorated with figures of snakes and reptiles in low relief. Further circular platform with standing male figure (?Oba) holding Osun staff in right proper hand and horn in left. Wears patterned skirt, armlets and single string of beads; tiered hairstyle and flaring hollowed headdress. Snakes on face from ears to jawline. In front stands small male figure holding chicken/cock.
