Relief plaque, lost-wax cast in brass. Narrow plaque, rectangular in form without side flanges. Background surface decorated with river leaf patterns and stippling. Two nail holes at top right and left corners. One hole at midway on right side, two holes at bottom right corner and midway. Depicts single standing European (Portuguese) figure with long hair and beard holding manilla in left hand and staff or stick in right hand. Figure wears brimmed helmet decorated with rings, sleeveless doublet with long-sleeved garment below, short pleated 'skirt', knee-length breeches and boots.
Commissioned by the donor, Major Gallwey, from Chief Inneh, the head of the guild of brass casters, Igun Street, Benin City, 1899. Described in correspondence with the Museum as being 'an exact copy of an old plaque' (See Collection File: Af1899,0710.1).
Fair; front surface pitted and with numerous casting flaws and small holes, especially in lower half. Bottom edge has missing sections. Missing top left corner.
