Benin ivory tusk, Yellow to brown in colour, highly polished, decorated with 5 bands of incised pattern. Oba received a tusk from every elephant killed in his kingdom. Some tusks placed on the Oba’s shrine to represent his strength. Others made into musical instruments for use in religious ceremonies. Acquired in Simonstown, South Africa, in 1901, said to have come from sacking of Benin by the British in 1897.
