Short, carved wooden staff with a creature at the top (possibly a pangolin). The creature has a small face and four legs and the body is squat and textured. There are two circular shapes which may be ears and a single arm with hand holding something by one of the ears. The creature stands on a circular platform at the top of the staff. There is an abstract motif carved into the bottom part of the staff. There are some historical water damage marks on the staff and a few chips missing from the creature.

'335 (Thomas number - 1st Catalogue)' has been added to the Other Nos field as it is written on the base of the staff and corresponds with N.W. Thomas' 1st Catalogue.
This appears to be part of a group of rattle staffs collected by N.W. Thomas, although it does not have a rattle section and is shorter than most of the other staffs.
These staffs (Z 20317 - Z 20342) appear to have been carved by the same hand, or in the same workshop and were collected by N.W. Thomas as a group. They are listed in Thomas' 1st catalogue (Doc.413) as entries 308-335, which are situated at the very back of the catalogue.
