Catalogue card notes: "Two paddles."
Added in different handwriting: "Carved and leaf shaped".
Added in a third handwriting: "Joined by 'trick' chain."
Purchased with a donation to the Museum Accession Fund from Curator Baron Anatole von Hugel, as noted in the Annual Report for items under 1887.65 'In those cases where the objects have not been presented directly, but have been purchase with money subscribed to the Museum Accession Fund, an asterisk is prefixed to the name of the donor'.
This item was previously noted as Edo in the Cultural Group field but this is not recorded on the catalogue card or accession register, and was possibly added because the Place field refers to 'Benin'. As the object has been identified as an Itsekiri/IJekri dance paddle, the Cultural Group has been updated to reflect this.
Catalogue card reads, in black ink: "E. / AFRICA | Gulf of Benin / 1887.64, (5). / 2 Paddles. / b. *Baron A von Hugel. / R 1887.64, (5)."
In second hand, blue biro: "WEST AFRICA | NIGERA / carved and leaf-shaped"
In third hand, pencil: "joined by 'trick' chain."
Red circular sticker in bottom right corner.
