Anhänger mit portugiesischem Reiter
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich / Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh. / Gelbguss / Ankauf von Adolf Heemke, 1904, Inv. Nr. C 4050

Pendant with Portuguese Horseman
Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass / Acquired from Adolf Heemke, 1904, Inv. no. C 4050
The equestrian figure represented here is often interpreted as Oba Esigie wearing European attire. This alludes to the European education of the early 16th century king and his close relationship with the Portuguese. According to another assumption, the horseman represents a Portuguese ally who supported the king in the fight against Idah.
