S. Strumpf was a merchant and agent for the trading company H. Bey & Co. in West Africa. He was probably active in the “Interior of Togo”. The first name of Strumpf does not appear in any of the historical documents available. He sold four objects from the Kingdom of Benin to the museum in 1903.

Bläser kündigten mit einem Stoß ins Elfenbeinhorn den öffentlichen Auftritt des Oba mit seinem Gefolge oder bei kriegerischen Aktionen das Vorrücken der Armee an. Die Hornbläser waren in einer Gilde der Iwebo-Palastgesellschaft der Hofmeister organisiert.

With a blast into the ivory horn, horn blowers announced the public appearance of the Oba and his entourage or, during military campaigns, the advance of the army. The horn blowers were organized in a guild belonging
to the Iwebo palace society of court chiefs.
