S. Strumpf was a merchant and agent for the trading company H. Bey & Co. in West Africa. He was probably active in the “Interior of Togo”. The first name of Strumpf does not appear in any of the historical documents available. He sold four objects from the Kingdom of Benin to the museum in 1903.
Reliefplatte mit Leopardenumhang
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh. / Gelbguss / Ankauf von S. Strumpf, 1903, Inv. Nr. C 3864

Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass / Acquired from
S. Strumpf, 1903, Inv. no. C 3864
The ceremonial attire of military leaders included a chest armour with a leopard head motif. Such armour tunics were worn during the Isiokuo war festival. The leopard image has a protective function and symbolises the power over life and death delegated to these warriors by the Oba. The only surviving example of such a leather tunic, covered with red wool flannel, is held
at the British Museum.
