S. Strumpf was a merchant and agent for the trading company H. Bey & Co. in West Africa. He was probably active in the “Interior of Togo”. The first name of Strumpf does not appear in any of the historical documents available. He sold four objects from the Kingdom of Benin to the museum in 1903.
Deckelkanne
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh. / Gelbguss / Ankauf von S. Strumpf, 1903, Inv. Nr. C 3862

Lidded Ewer
Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass / Acquired from S. Strumpf in 1903, Inv. no. C 3862
This jug combines Islamic, Indian and European stylistic elements of the 16th century. In a fascinating synthesis, the artist has fused Islamic elements, such as the elongated beakshaped spout, with the elegantly sweeping handle derived from Indian models, and a lid and base design inspired by European examples. No comparable vessel is known. In addition to being a masterpiece of design, the ewer is an early document of cultural entanglements.
