Head of a Snake Sculpture
Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 17th/18th century / Brass / Acquired from Fritz Stahl, 1903, and Oskar Kaiser, 1904, Inv. no. C 3827
On the roofs of certain buildings of the royal palace bronze snakes were attached, whose heads extended to the roof edges. They possibly had a protective function and were considered a symbol of the Oba, whose residence was the counterpart of the underwater palace
of the god of the sea Olokun. About fifteen heads and only two body fragments of this giant py-
thon survived in museums. European visitors mentioned the royal roof ornamentation since the early 18th century. The two parts were joined for display in the museum by means of a metal sheet and rivets around 1910, but did not originally belong together.
