John Paul Frisch (1875-1934) was a Hamburg merchant residing in the Sternschanze district. Frisch worked as an agent for the company Bey & Zimmer in West Africa. He has been recorded on several passenger documents travelling to southern Nigeria with Woermann ships. In 1903, Frisch sold four objects from the Kingdom of Benin to the museum.

In Edo heißt eine Sitzung einberufen, „einen Agba herausbringen“. Der Besitz eines Agba verweist auf einen Autoritätsstatus in der Gesellschaft. Auf dem Stuhl finden sich Abbildungen von Europäern, die sich in ihrer Kleidung des 19. Jhs. von den verbreiteten Portugiesendarstellungen unterscheiden.
Ebenso sind europäische Importprodukte dargestellt. Der König steht auf einer Truhe, die mit einem europäischen Schloss versperrt ist, an dem ein Schlüssel hängt. Neben ihm sitzen zwei Europäer, einer hält eine Pistole in der Hand.

In Edo language, to convene a meeting means “to bring out an Agba.” The ownership of an Agba indicates a status of authority in society. The imagery on this chair illustrates Europeans, who in their 19th century
clothing, differ from the common Portuguese representations.
Along with them, European imported goods are also visible. The king is standing on a chest locked with a European padlock, to which a key is attached.
Two Europeans are seated next to him, one carrying a gun.
