William Downing Webster (1868-1913) was a well-known British ethnographica dealer from whom almost all major ethnographic collections in Great Britain and continental Europe acquired Benin pieces. In addition to a donation, the MARKK’s Benin collection today contains twelve objects that were purchased from Webster in 1900/1901.
Armring der Ifieto
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 18./19. Jh.(?) / Gelbguss, Kupfer / Ankauf von W. D. Webster, 1900, Inv. Nr. C 2875

Ifieto Arm Ring
Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 18th /19th century (?) / Brass, copper / Acquired from W. D. Webster, 1900, Inv. no. C 2875
This ring was probably formerly owned by a member of the Ifieto guild. These ritual “purifiers of the path” clear the way for the Oba when he moves outside of the palace grounds during court festivals. For this, Ifieto hold special rings in their hands facing forward, whose spiritual power not only drives onlookers away, but also malicious forces.
