William Downing Webster (1868-1913) was a well-known British ethnographica dealer from whom almost all major ethnographic collections in Great Britain and continental Europe acquired Benin pieces. In addition to a donation, the MARKK’s Benin collection today contains twelve objects that were purchased from Webster in 1900/1901.
Reliefplatte:
Drei Würdenträger mit Rassel und Doppelgongs
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh. / Gelbguss / Ankauf von W. D. Webster, 1900, Inv. Nr. C 2867

Relief Plaque:
Three Dignitaries with Rattles and Double Gongs
Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass / Acquired from
W. D. Webster, 1900, Inv. no. C 2867
This relief testifies to the importance of musical accompaniment of court ceremonies.
The two outer musicians strike the double gongs common in Benin, while the dignitary in the centre shakes a spherical rattle with both hands. The magnificent headdresses with a central protrusion and their high beaded collars identify the three as high-ranking court members.
Today, spherical calabash rattles covered with a net and fruit shells attached to them are usually operated by groups of women who use them to accompany the entry of high-ranking dignitaries at court ceremonies.
