Henkelkrug nach europäischem Vorbild
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh. / Gelbguss / Ankauf vom Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, 1899, Inv. Nr. C 2435

European Style Vessel
Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass/ Acquired from the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, 1899, Inv. no. C 2435
The vessel has been cast in one piece, its lid was probably lost in the course of transfer. Apparently, it is an imitation of a European earthenware jug with a pewter lid. A number of the prestigious metal vessels used at
the royal court were crafted after foreign models. Especially from the 17th century onwards, pans, buckets, bowls and containers of various shapes and functions arrived in Benin as trade goods and gifts, inspiring local artists.
