Hugo Schilling was an antiquities dealer active in Hamburg in the second half of the 19th century. According to current knowledge, Schilling was not active in West Africa himself, but merely used the port of Hamburg as an important transhipment point to acquire objects brought to Hamburg by third parties (presumably mainly captains/seamen) from all over the world. In 1898, Schilling sold an object from the Kingdom of Benin to the MARKK.

Über die eigentliche Verwendung dieses einzigartigen Objekts ist nichts überliefert. Der durch die Zusammensetzung verschiedenster spirituell aufgeladener Materialien gekennzeichnete Eisenstab könnte in Zusammenhang mit Ogun stehen, dem Gott des Krieges und Eisens, der Schutzgottheit der Bauern, Handwerker, Jäger und Krieger und all jener, die mit Metall und Geräten arbeiten. Ogun ist eine im Eisen inhärente Kraft, die erschaffen und zerstören kann.

Nothing is known about the actual use of this unique object. The iron rod, which consists of various spiritually charged materials, could have been related to Ogun, the god of war
and iron, and patron of farmers, craftsmen, hunters and warriors, and all those working with metal and tools. Ogun is a force inherent in iron that can create and destroy.
