Beschnitzte Kokosnussschale (Trinkbecher)
Unbekannter Omada-Künstler / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh. / Kokosnuss / Ankauf vom Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, 1898, Inv. Nr. C 2320

Carved Coconut Shell
(Drinking Cup)
Unidentified Omada artist / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Coconut / Acquired from the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, 1898, Inv. no. C 2320
The bowl is ornamented with five mudfish and probably served as a drinking cup. The container features an Oba with two dignitaries, a severed head and a spear or arrow. It probably served as a container for liquids and its two holes allowed the attachment of a hanging device. The stopper has been lost. Coconuts were introduced to Benin by the Portuguese and became indigenous there.
