Christliches Kreuz
Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh.(?) / Gelbguss / Ankauf von Carl Goltermann, 1906, Inv. Nr. 922:06

Christian Cross
Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass / Acquired from Carl Goltermann in 1906, Inv. no. 922:06
This cross exemplifies early Christian traditions in Benin that continue to be practised in the Aruosa Church in Benin City. Endeavours to Christianise the people started with the earliest contacts with Portugal. The interest of Benin kings in Christianity was linked to their desire for guns and cannons, as a papal edict had forbidden the sale of firearms to non-Christians. Sacred objects brought by the missionaries inspired local creations.
