Provenience undocumented. Mid 16th to 17th century dates based on chronology for Benin bronzes established by William Fagg and Philip Dark. Identification provided by Hirshhorn Museum (HMSG).
Description: Rectangular cast plaque depicts frontal view of male figure with a shorter figure at his right. Larger male wears head gear and elaborate armor over knee-length skirt. Carries armor decorated with incised design in left hand and a long weapon in right hand. Attendant has crested head gear, belt with bells and tassels (?), & objects in both hands. Background of plaque decorated with incised floral design & stamped with tiny circular imprints. Condition: plaque covered with rust.
