Provenience undocumented. Mid 16th to 17th century dates based on chronology for Benin bronzes established by William Fagg and Philip Dark. Identification provided by Hirshhorn Museum (HMSG).
Description: rectangular plaque has raised frontal view of male figure. Legs spread, left arm raised holding curved sword, right hand at hip holding whip & wide paddle-shaped item. Figure has stylized face with large eyes, wide nose, and full lips. Wears tubular headdress with feathers, braids, tassels, and chin strap. Clad in sleeveless armor over knee-length skirt, decorated with cross-hatching and stamped design. Has breastplate with spikes protruding upward. Bottom of armor has 2 long tassels ending with bells. Wears wrist bands & arm cuffs. Armor is decorated with design of tiny circular stamps. Background of plaque has design of flower outlines with other geometric designs made from tiny circular stamps. Around edges are pierced holes (for hanging ?) Exhibited in NMNH “African Voices” from 1999 - present. From African Voices exhibit: "The feather in his helmet, the leopard tooth and bell necklace, and the two ceremonial swords symbolize this warrior's chiefly rank."
