Provenience undocumented. Mid 16th to 17th century dates based on chronology for Benin bronzes established by William Fagg and Philip Dark. Identification provided by Hirshhorn Museum (HMSG).
Description; rectangular brass plaque is nailed to wooden mount. Plaque depicts raised frontal view of bare-chested male figure, wearing conical helmet and knee-length skirt. Helmet and lower helm are decorated with raised geometric pattern, a feather & long tassels. Has raised outlines of almond-shaped eyes with stamped pupils, wide nose, full lips partially covered by lower helm. Arms are at sides & wears wrist bands. Torso has nipples and navel details. Wide belt secures wrapped skirt covered with raised decorative design. At left hip is weapon (?) Covered by left hand. Has ankle bands with protruding attachments. Background of plaque covered with incised quatre-foil outlines & stamped patterns of tiny circles. Along edges are holes for nails. Condition: heavy. Losses at 3 corners.
