Description
Album containing photographs and a journal by Capt. Herbert Sutherland Walker, relating to the British military campaign against the Kingdom of Benin in February 1897. The album contains seventy-seven photographic prints by Herbert Sutherland Walker (and/or others); and a handwritten diary by Walker, titled on the first page 'To BENIN & back', with entries dated from 16 January to 16 April 1897. Also in the album are newspaper cuttings, several published illustrations and photographs, and other printed matter. The album has been organised approximately chronologically by the compiler, though not exactly or consistently so, in order to show a narrative of the campaign ('Benin Punitive Expedition').
