A caption below the print (written by the album's compiler) describes the cross as being that 'erected by members of the [Niger Coast] Protectorate[,] April 1898', while the names (Phillips, Copland-Crawford, Maling, Campbell, Elliott, Powis, Gordon) identify it as being that raised to those members of James Phillips' party killed in January 1897.
