Description
Interior of George William Neville’s house, showing Benin "Bronzes saved by British Museum Authorities & date back about 500 years." The artefacts include a carved ivory elephant task hanging over the mantle-piece, two bronze plaques and two bonze heads incorporated into the hearth surround, and two bronze leopards on either side of the fireplace, To the left are two carved wooden stools (one cropped by the frame), and a bronze head with ivory tusk sitting on a windowsill. On the mantle-piece are other bronze heads and figure, and metal trays, containers and candlesticks, although the provenance is not ascertained. [JD 02/11/2017]
