Songs as Documentation of Pre-Colonial Benin History

This video is about a song of the Benin people that recounts the historical trajectory of the kingdom during the reign of Ọba Ẹwuakpẹ. The song is a documentation of a tragic event that befell the palace of the Ọba of Benin in the eighteenth century. The palace was deserted and the king was rejected in his own ancestral village where his mother instructed him to go if he had difficulties during his reign. Lady Jane Ekhator renders this and other songs with an explanation of the context in which they were sung. This song is about the fall, struggles and return of the Ọba. Today, Ọba Ẹwuakpẹ is esteemed for his contribution to re-installing the principle of primogeniture.
