About the Ada Sword

This video reveals that many of these objects have been erroneously described or categorised as swords, which is Ada in Edo language. Whereas they are actually executioner’s knives called ‘Ọhọ’ and not Ada. The Ada is made through the commission of the Ọba by the Igun-Ẹronmwon and the Ọhọ, the executioner’s sword, is made by other parts of the Igun guilds, like the ironsmiths at the Igun Ẹyaenugie, Igun Ugbọha, and Igun Owegie. These are members of the Igun guild, who specialised in the production of weapons, and this type of sword, which is known as Ọhọ in Benin Kingdom. They were often the executioners' tools.
