In this interview, Mr Igbineweka speaks about the Igbesamwan guild, which is one of the Iwebo Palace Societies. He dates woodcarving back to the reign of Ọba Esigie. He explains that it was the duty of the Igbesamwan guild to render any service that has to do with or is related to wood carving for the Ọba of Benin. The Igbesamwan guild had occupied a small quarter, which stretches from Oza Street to Eki Street. The Ine (the leader), Eholor, Obazoro and Obaseyen are the title holders in the Igbesamwan guild. The members of the Igbesamwan guild do not perform the Iyanehien ritual ceremony when given a title. It is the Igbesamwan that carve the Ukhure for the royal court. The Emuemue statue was originally carved by the Igbesamwan guild to scare the Igala enemies away from Benin City during the Benin and Igala war.
