Mr Igbineweka describes the process of ivory carving in Benin Kingdom. The piece of ivory that is being carved carries three important motifs: the Obanuri, Ogiengien and the Ọba. He said that an ivory carving is more valuable if there is the motif of an Ọba. He explained that to prevent the ivory from splitting, the hole in it has to be covered so that the wall gecko does not enter it to urinate inside. In addition, the Igbesamwan carvers use water to preserve the ivory, and while carving they add salt to the water and soak the inside of the ivory to make the outer layer soften.
