An Introduction to Pottery Making in Benin Kingdom

The materials these women use for pottery are clay soaked in water to soften it, which is then mixed with sand. After properly mixing the clay and sand they start their moulding on an Are – a base from broken pots which is placed on the bottom of a new mould. There are different types of patterns for particular types of pot. One of these is called agbeniri – the rope pattern. The women describe the different types of pots (akhe, Uru and ukodo) and their uses, which range from medical herbs, Olokun initiation, storing of drinking water and other ritual uses including in churches. The different designs are cowries, snakes, ladder, Ada and Ẹben.
