Ọba Ọzolua and Ise of Utekon

According to tradition, Ọba Ọzolua waged war against Ogierumwanbo, a warrior at one of the Oka villages, who offered a strong opposition to Ọba Ọzolua. Pa Aikpitanyi tells the story about this warrior and Ọba Ọzolua, who took the warrior’s wife, Eruvbi, into his harem and made his only son, Ise, a sword bearer (Ọmada). Conflict ensued between Ise, the sword bearer and Ọba Ozolua the Conqueror because the Ọba usually prayed for the conquest of Utekon village whenever he was propitiating his ancestors or pouring libation. Ise is said to have become infuriated when he realized that Utekon was his mother’s village and Ukhumwun was related to him paternally. Pa Aikpitanyi said that one day Ise challenged Ọba Ọzolua and asked Ọba Ozolua to discharge him from the palace. The story says Ise was discharged, and when Ọba Ozolua attacked Utekon, Ise killed many of the Ọba’s warriors in retaliation for burning down Utekon and the killing of his mother, whom he thought dead. He then narrates how Ọba Ọzolua had to climb a kola-nut tree when he feared Ise could defeat him and make him prisoner. Ise was reminded that it was a taboo to cut down a kola-nut tree because its fruits are used for the propitiation of the deities and departed ancestors of the land. He said Ọba Ọzolua did not defeat Ise in the wrestling contest but was tricked by Erumwonria to aid Ọba Ọzolua. According to Pa Aikpitanyi, while they were on their way to Benin City, Erumwonria made a mockery of Ọba Ọzolua because of his assistance that enabled the king to defeat Ise. As a result of the continued mockery, Ọba Ọzolua designed a scheme to kill Erumwonria. The Ọba planted an Ikhinmwi_ _(New Bouldia Laevis) tree at the spot he buried Erumwonria by placing the tip of the stem on the ground instead of the base. It is believed that Ise’s mother, who did not die, turned herself into a river. On getting to the river, Ọba Ọzolua placed a curse on it as he did at Erumwonria’s grave. Erumwonria and Eruvbi were deified at Utekon and Ukhunmwun and are propitiated till date.
