Different Types of Beads and Their Uses

In this interview, Ohen Omoregie talks about beads, whose use is associated with Olokun in Benin Kingdom. Beads, such as Ivie and Ẹkan, are believed to be a part of the wealth of Olokun which has been given to the Ọba of Benin. Ohen Omoregie explains that all the beads worn in Benin Kingdom by the chiefs are properties of the Ọba. According to him, the Ọba perform a special ritual to cleanse the beads called Ugie-Ivie. During the festival, all coral beads in the kingdom are taken to Ọba Palace. This ritual usually lasts for a month, during which time the chiefs are permitted by the Ọba to wear a particular type of bead called Omorhue. Ohen Omoregie brings out different types of beads and explains their uses and significance.
