Wilhelm Langheld (1867-1917) was an officer of the so-called Kaiserliche Schutztruppe (Imperial German Military) and representative of the colonial administration in Cameroon and German East Africa. In 1902, he sold an altar figure of a rooster from the Kingdom of Benin to the museum.

Es ist nicht dokumentiert unter welchen Umständen die Figur beschädigt wurde, die in diesem Zustand in die Sammlung kam.
Sie steht hier am Eingang der Ausstellung, um die Zerstörung und den bleibenden Wissensverlust zu markieren, der durch die koloniale Invasion der Stadt Benin und die Plünderung der königlichen Kunstschätze geschehen ist. Das Trauma wirkt bis heute nach.

Damaged Rooster Altar Figure

There is no documentation about the circumstances under which the figure was damaged, it was accessioned in this condition. Placed here at the entrance of the exhibition, it marks the destruction and loss of knowledge due to the colonial invasion of Benin City and the looting of the royal art treasures. The trauma reverberates to this day.
